Welcome to CYO winter track 2020! Winter track is open to any child in grades 3-8. Enrollment in a parish is NOT a requirement. As you’ll read below, winter track is fluid and requires some flexibility. The program is coordinated/managed with volunteer coaches from the CYO community. We don’t require that you attend every practice but STRONGLY ENCOURAGE sticking to 1x a week (indoor or outdoor). Participation in meets is NOT a requirement.
Indoor Facilities/Start Times:
There will be a weekly INDOOR practice on THURSDAY’S in JANUARY/ WEDNESDAY’S in FEBRUARY at MOUNT SAINT MICHAEL Academy, Bronx, NY. All indoor practices 5:30-6:45 (open gym for cooldown from 6:45-7pm). Starting 1/09.
EXCITING NEWS: We’ll be adding a weekly practice at IONA COLLEGE and/or SJP (Larchmont). Thank you Reilley family! Details to follow.
Outdoor Winter Trail Practices:
Locations vary, RSVP mandatory, weather 35+ (no precipitation/awful wind chills). 4pm-4:30pm, Wednesdays in January. 3-mile runs. Day may change (weather). Need at least 7. Experience needed. FIRST PRACTICE 1/08, TWIN LAKES, EASTCHESTER.
Winter Training: For those new to winter indoor gym training…it’s a ton of high energy repetition drills for better form. We use ladders, hurdles, steps and laps. Core and upper (no weights) are incorporated into every practice. They’re very fluid practices and much different than a parish practice. For those on the fence, we’d encourage a trial practice (no obligation).
What do I need?: We’d recommend a wick base for a practice top. Mat and water are mandatory at every indoor practice. Please don’t forget a mat…a gym floor without padding makes core more difficult.
Experience?: None needed. Actually, if you have a kid that hates sports and won’t even run to the Christmas tree? Perfect! Send them down. Yes, they’ll be running with kids who essentially train all year. No, that doesn’t make a difference. They’re an incredible group of kids, accepting of everyone. Are the practices difficult? Yes but it’s not a “one size fits all” practice. Example? Some kids will be running around the gym for 20 minutes without stopping…some 10, some 5, some maybe 1. Doesn’t matter, we all start somewhere and NOBODY will ever been looked down on for being new. It’s a very competitive group with big hearts.
Indoor Meets: We’ll be competing in 2 indoor winter meets February (USATF/ARMORY). Please register your child by the deadline and let me know when she/he is registered. If registering your child for the USATF meet, she/he will also need a USATF membership. Coach Stefan will coach/help with any day-of tagging/registering. If more than 10 kids register, we’ll group us as a team. Meets:
- SUNDAY 2/09, 2020 USATF New York Indoor Track & Field Championships, Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, Staten Island, NY.
- MONDAY (Presidents Day) 2/17, Armory Youth Championships, NYRR, 9am. Armory Track, NY, NY 10032.
Uniforms: You can use your parish jerseys at the indoor meets or purchase a CYO club singlet (reasonable) from the CYO online store. I’d prefer if everyone wears the same jersey at non-CYO sanctioned events (USATF/NYRR/AAU).
Rules: NO PHONES OR EARPODS during practice. Bring them, but don’t use them. Have fun, work hard, listen and clean up any trash you leave behind.
Do I need to be affiliated with a church?: No. It’s open to everyone.
$50 per child unless enrolled with the club. The meet/uniform/membership fees are covered by the family. THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS THAT MAKE THIS HAPPEN. Similar programs cost 5x that amount. PLEASE ENROLL ON www.cyony.org,
Thank you all for participating. We started CYO winter training 5 years ago for those kids (maybe 10) who wanted to run all year. Last year we had practices with 50+ kids! We never imagined it would grow into an entire season. Welcome to winter. Let us know if you have any questions.
